The body does not produce iodine on its own, it can be taken through food or medication. The recommended daily allowance of iodine for an adult is 150 µg, which in some cases can vary up to 300 µg. For example, for women during pregnancy the norm is 250 µg but during lactation 290 µg (ensuring the normal growth of the child as well as the development of the nervous system and brain). On the other hand, the maximum daily intake of iodine is 600 μg per day.

Sources of iodine are: seafood, white fish, kelp, various vegetables and fruits, eggs, milk, beef, etc. In addition, a fairly old and effective method of prevention is the use of iodized salt. Taking 5 grams of iodized salt daily can provide the body with an additional 18 – 36 μg of iodine.

Nowadays it is popular to mineralize water with various elements: magnesium, boron, silicon, etc. Sometimes it’s helpful, sometimes it’s not. What about iodine in the water?

Water iodization is not a common practice. Latvian company “Mangaļi” are offering mineral water “Mangaļi PLUS” that is enriched with mineral salts such as zinc, magnesium and iodine. The description on the label says that it contains 11.25 μg of iodine, however, the exact total amount of substances added to the water and its chemical content are not known.

Iodine water is not included in the list of medicine recommended for iodine prevention because the exact content of elements in the water composition is not known.
