How to save water?

Kā ietaupīt ūdeni

A natural resource like water cannot regenerate as fast as we consume it, therefore smart consumption of this resource is a widely discussed topic nowadays. Reducing water consumption not only reduces environmental pollution but also the cost of monthly bills. Within the framework of this article we will talk about water consumption and the possibilities of reducing it looking at 9 ways how to save water in the apartment and house.

Structure of water consumption in the household

How to save water

The diagram shows data about the main sources of water consumption in the household. According to available information, the largest amount of water is consumed for the toilet (36.2%) as well as for the bathroom, taking a bath or shower (30.4%). The lowest water consumption is while cooking and drinking it.

By analyzing daily habits and implementing small improvements, water consumption and related costs can be significantly reduced.

Nine ways how to save water

  1. Install a water meter

Advantages of a water meter:

  • find out the structure of your water consumption;
  • pay only for the amount of water consumed;
  • determine how much water is discharged into the sewer.
  1. Make sure the plumbing is not leaking

Leakage from faucets can drain up to three liters of water per day and around 90 liters per month. Leakage from the toilet tank can drain up 150 – 200 liters of water per day, which is about 4.5 – 6 m³ per month.

If you notice a leak in your plumbing, fix it as soon as possible!

  1. Install a toilet bowl with two flush buttons

Toilet bowls with two flush buttons allow you to reduce the amount of water used by approximately two times. The volume of a standard toilet tank is 6 liters which is equivalent to one flush. If you use the “1/2 flush” button, 3 instead of 6 liters of water will go down the drain.

  1. A quick shower

The average amount of water consumption in the shower is approximately 30-50 liters, with longer washing the water consumption can reach 80-120 liters. In order to reduce the amount of water consumed in the shower, you can use the following methods:

  • reduce showering time;
  • turn off the water when you are not using it (e.g. when soaping your hair and body).

On the other hand, the amount of water used when taking a bath depends on the volume of the bath specified by the manufacturer (on average 140 – 200 l). You can reduce water consumption by bathing in a bathtub that is not fully filled with water. Another method to reduce water consumption is to bathe several people (e.g. children) at the same time.

  1. Fill the washing machine full when washing clothes

Washing a few items or a full washing machine will use the same amount of water. Washing machines use an average of 40-80 liters of water per wash. About 280 l of water are consumed per week with daily washing. By reducing the frequency of washing and increasing the amount of washing items, water consumption will decrease significantly.

  1. Install the pressure reducer and nozzles

In order to save the water, it is possible to install nozzles or so called aerators on the faucet. The principle of operation of it:  the air is added to the flow of water making it more voluminous. In this way it is possible to save up to 50% of water.

The pressure reducer, on the other hand, is installed in the pipeline and is designed to reduce pressure. This is a very important step towards saving the water because when the pressure increases to one atmosphere, water consumption increases by 6-8%, when the pressure increases to two atmospheres, water consumption increases by 16%. Also, the pressure reducer will protect faucets, boilers and water filters from leaks and damage, which are often caused by pressure fluctuations.

  1. Install the dishwasher

It might seem that a dishwasher is quite an expensive purchase but it is a good way to save water. Washing dishes by hand consumes an average of 20 to 50 liters of water while one household dishwasher load (depending on the size) consumes an average of 9-12 liters of water. To ensure maximum water savings, it is recommended to fill the dishwasher full before washing.

  1. Install boiler

If you want to save hot water, you can install a boiler. The limited amount of hot water is a good incentive to save it.

  1. Replace the filter elements on time

We have previously discussed the fact that reverse osmosis (RO) systems discharge a relatively large amount of water down the drain during the filtration process. For most RO systems it is around 8-9 liters per 1 liter of purified water. More economical RO systems are also available which drain about 5-8 liters of water per 1 liter of purified water. Some systems work with 50/50 productivity such as the Ecosoft P’URE AquaCalcium Mint Reverse Osmosis Filter.

If the membrane or cartridges of RO systems are clogged, water consumption can increase up to 20 liters. Therefore their replacement should be done on time.
