CLACK BIRM iron removal filtering material can be used in both gravity feed and pressure water treatment systems. Birm filter material acts as an insoluble catalyst to enhance the reaction between dissolved oxygen (D.O.) and iron compounds. Dissolved iron in groundwater is usually in the state of ferric bicarbonate (due to excess of free carbon dioxide) that is not filterable. Birm material, acting as a catalyst between oxygen and soluble iron compounds, enhances the oxidation reaction of Fe++ to Fe+++ and produces ferric hydroxide which precipitates and is easily filtered. The physical properties of Birm provide an excellent filter material that is easy to clean by backwashing to remove deposits. Birm filter materials are not consumed in the de-ironing operation and therefore have enormous economic advantages over many other de-ironing methods.
