The formation of limestone on household appliances, their heating elements and pipes is a common problem in households where increased water hardness is observed. The efficiency of using such devices decreases by up to 30 – 40%, increasing the consumption of electricity and expenses for the consumed electricity.
As our client interest for descaling water filters is high, in this article we will consider the topic of limestone deposits and possible solutions to this problem.
Limestone deposits
Although the hardness of water, which is allowed by the water quality standards, is safe for humans, it causes some harm to our household appliances. Hard water contributes to the formation of limestone deposits mainly in washing machines, dishwashers and boilers. Limestone deposits interfere the heat exchange between the heating element and the water. As a result the heating elements deteriorate faster, the consumption of electricity and the duration of water heating are increased.
Today the problem of limestone deposit formation can be solved in several ways. Descaling agents are available for washing machines and dishwashers which are systematically added to the water during washing. To remove limescale deposits from boilers it is necessary to use more aggressive chemicals and to have certain skills for performing the maintenance. The optimal solution is to install a descaling water filter near the household appliance which protects it, increases the efficiency and service life as well as prevents from the formation of limescale on the heating elements.
What is a descaling water filter?
The descaling water filter is a small sized flask type filter filled with crystals or granules. The filter is designed for installation on household appliances directly at the water inlet. As the water passes through the descaling filter, a certain amount of substances are released which bind hardness salts and prevent the formation of limescale.
As one of the option is to install a polyphosphate descaling filter. Inside of the filter there are crystals of soluble sodium polyphosphate. The second option is to install a pellet descaling filter, containing more gentle but no less effective reagents. They do not contain phosphates/polyphosphates and are harmless to nature and humans.
Company Ecosoft offers the Scalex pellet descaling water filters: filters for washing machines and dishwashers as well as filters for boilers. Ecosoft Scalex descaling water filters protect household appliances from mechanical impurities, reduce water hardness salts and prevent limestone crystals from forming into the crystal grid. The filter resource is 20, 000 liters.
How to install the Ecosoft Scalex descaling filter for a washing machine, dishwasher?
- Turn off the water supply to the device using a separate tap. If there are not separate tap, then turn off the water supply to the entire household and then release the pressure by opening the nearest faucet.
- Open the filter package and screw its upper (green) part into the water supply pipe by hand.
- Connect the device hose to the lower (transparent) part of the filter.
- Restore the water supply by gradually opening the tap.
- Check for leaks.
How to install the Ecosoft Scalex descaling filter for a boiler?
- The principle of operation of this filter is similar but it takes a little longer time to install.
- Turn off the water supply and release the remaining water pressure in the system by opening one of the taps.
- On the wall make marks for the holes necessary for the filter. Drill and insert the plastic parts of the dowels into the holes.
- Install the filter in the water supply pipeline to the boiler using threaded connections ( 1/2”). For joints it is recommended to use sealant. It is possible to install an additional faucet in front of the filter which facilitates the process of replacing cartridges.
- Fix the filter to the wall with screws, screwing them into the dowels.
- Open the water supply to the filter and check for leaks.

How to change the filler (for the descaling filter for the washing machine / dishwasher)?
- Turn off the water supply.
- Unscrew the transparent housing from the filter head (lid).
- Remove the mesh covering the filler.
- Drain the remaining material and rinse the filter components with running water.
- Fill the filter flask with new material (one filler pack is designed for two replacements) and return the sieve to its place.
- Screw the filter housing into the space provided for it.
- Open the water supply and check for leaks.
How to replace the cartridge (descaling filter for boiler)?
To replace the filter element (the average service life of it is 6 months):
- Turn off the water supply to the filter.
- Unscrew the lower transparent part of the flask from the mounting head using the wrench that comes with it.
- Remove the cartridge.
- Rinse the flask with tap water.
- Insert a new cartridge.
- Screw the flask into place by hand without using a wrench.
- Open the water supply, check the tightness.
