Well water: questions & answers

Well water

Water from a properly installed well is one of the freshest. Only the spring water is fresher than the well water. Today we will take a look at the topic of well water, answer the most frequently asked questions about it and also look at possible solutions for the well water problems.

Why is the well water turbid?

Groundwater is classified according to the layers where it occurs. Some rocks in the upper layers tend to cause water turbidity which can be prevented with sufficient well bore depth. In addition, the turbidity of the well water also can arise immediately after its installation or if it has been idle for a long time. These problems can be solved by pumping out the well. If the water is still turbid after pumping, it is necessary to install mechanical water treatment system.

Why is well water hard?

Water hardness is due to the fact that some underground layers contain large amounts of soluble mineral compounds (including calcium and magnesium carbonates). When water moves through the depths of the earth, it absorbs mineral compounds and forms the water with an increased concentration of hardness salts.

Why does well water leave a red or black coating on plumbing?

Well water

The most common impurities in the well water are iron and manganese. These impurities are not found in surface water bodies, in the air they quickly oxidize to insoluble impurities. Some of them settle on the surface of the soil (are absorbed by microorganisms), while some of them remain suspended in the water.

When the water flows from the faucet, a small part of water remains on the surface of sanitary ware. If the water is hard, lime deposits form as the water dries. If the water contains a lot of iron and/or manganese, in addition to lime deposits, iron (red color), manganese (black color), iron + manganese (burgundy color) compounds are formed.

Why does well water turn yellow when heated?

This phenomenon is related to the iron ions in the water. When well water is heated, the oxidation reaction rate increases and small colloidal iron particles are formed, which gives the water a yellow tint.

Why does black water come out of the well?

Akas ūdens

Turbid well water with a black, brown or gray tint is most often a sign of well flooding due to rain or melting snow. A decrease in pressure in the pipes or a low location of the pump can also be the cause of the problem. As a result clean water is mixed with clay and silt.  Such a problems are solved by pumping out the well.

However, if the problem occurs immediately after drilling the well and its depth does not exceed 15 meters, there is a possibility that the well is drilled in a mud layer. In this case, it is necessary to deepen the well.

Gray or brown water from the well can also be due to high iron and/or manganese content. In this case installation of the water treatment system will help.

Why does well water smell like sewage?

Akas ūdens

The smell of rot and sewage is characteristic of the well water that is contaminated with microorganisms. This may indicate the entry of sewage + feces into the well or the multiplication of microorganisms in the water column. These problems are solved by pumping and decontaminating the well.

We often get also a question why the water from the well smells like fish? This may indicate the presence of industrial wastewater pollution.

Why does well water smell like rotten eggs?

The characteristic smell of rotten eggs indicates the presence of hydrogen sulfide in the water. This gas by itself is not dangerous and in the air it oxidizes quickly. The solution to this problem is to install a water filter with catalytic carbon which oxidizes hydrogen sulfide to safe compounds that are tasteless and odorless.

Why is the water from the well oily?

A film of oil on the water surface is a common phenomenon for groundwater. It indicates the organic contamination.

The main reasons are:

  • a decrease in pump oil radiator pressure due to its damage;
  • contamination with diesel fuel, gasoline, machine oil from the surface or the ground.

Depending on the origin of the problem, there are three possible solutions: pumping out the well, deepening the well or installing the water treatment system.

Why is the water from the well sweet?

The reason for the sweet taste of the water is most often the presence of soda or nitrates.

How to purify well water?

Akas ūdens

When it comes to domestic water purification, the optimal solution is the installation of a complex water purification system. It can be supplemented with a drinking water purification system.

There are several stages of the water treatment:

  1. Mechanical cleaning of large particles (clay, sand, etc.). Depending on the system performance and water turbidity, cartridge filters, backwash filters or refill systems can be used.
  2. Water purification from iron, manganese, hardness salts and organic substances. Thanks to the unique Ecosoft Ecomix material, all these problems can be solved by installing one filter.
  3. If the water is contaminated with hydrogen sulfide, it is possible to install a cartridge or refill filter with Centaur material.
  4. The UV lamp protects the water supply system from microbiological contamination.
  5. A triple filter or reverse osmosis system help to ensure the quality water for drinking and cooking.
